Forensic Psychiatry is a subspecialty of psychiatry that applies psychiatric knowledge and expertise within the justice system. Forensic psychiatrists work closely with the legal system to determine competency of defendants to stand trial, give expert witness testimony in court, and help make recommendations for defense tactics and sentencing. The psychiatric expert is asked to review issues, then formulate an opinion, and in so doing, will explain the basis for that opinion, which will include important concepts, approaches, and methods applicable to psychiatry.
